How to Play 2048: Rules, Controls, and First Wins

Master the basic rules, controls, and board habits so every swipe moves you closer to a 2048 tile.

What Is 2048?

2048 is a sliding number puzzle on a 4×4 grid. Each turn you move every tile in one direction. When two tiles with the same value collide, they merge into one tile with double the value. After a successful move, a new 2 (or sometimes a 4) appears in an empty cell.

The classic goal is to create a 2048 tile. The game can continue after that toward 4096 and higher. You lose when the board is full and no move creates a merge.

How to Move and Merge

On desktop, use the arrow keys (or WASD in some versions). On mobile, swipe across the board. Only moves that change the board count—if nothing slides or merges, no new tile spawns.

The merge rule

2 + 2 becomes 4, 4 + 4 becomes 8, 8 + 8 becomes 16, and so on. Each merge scores points equal to the new tile’s value.

What counts as a valid move

At least one tile must slide or merge. Dead swipes do nothing—use them to test directions, then commit to a move that improves the board.

Your First Reliable Habits

Pick one corner for your highest tile early and prefer moves that keep it there. Keep similar values near each other so merges stay available. When the board fills up, look for forced merges before panic-swiping.

Patience beats speed in the first games. Once these habits stick, strategy guides for openings, corners, and snake patterns become much easier to apply.

Where to Go Next

After you understand the rules, read the beginner guide for a full learning path, then practice corner and opening strategy until reaching 2048 feels repeatable—not lucky.
